Education - What is the Objective?

I am not sure what I want education to do for me, my children, my countrymen. I hear interesting ideas. Indian education system is bad, Indian education is good, Obama is afraid of it. Modern Indian education system was created by Macaulay created this system to produce clerks. We have been enslaved again by not being taught in vernacular languages. Our science education is in dire straits focusing on rote learning and spirit of inquiry is missing, scientific attitude is missing.

What was the Indian Education System before Britishers? Was there one? Was it any good? Why it changed? What should we do now? What can I do as an individual? Some questions that have been troubling me for some time and to get these answers and many more I started reading about education in India. I have a belief that ancient education system must have been of some good if it helped us produce Charak, Sushrut, Araybhatt, Panini and so on. It may be of no use today or may be of great relevance, I do not know.

This blog intends to capture this journey of inquiry. I have already read a few books and I am reading a few more. More about these books, my agreements and disagreements and my thoughts very soon.
